A Reflection

When asked about the successes and challenges I experienced during the Laureate Faculty Development’s Hybrid and Blended Learning Certificate training, I must confess that there are more successes than any other thing. Even today my personal satisfaction with this instructional model continues to be fruitful and very successful, I continue to believe that this educational model remains incredibly interesting and a field that needs to be researched much more. On the other hand, when I dropped in the certificate online classes, lots of the data proposed to us participants were not new to me. I had been trying out some sort of online learning with my language students at Universidad Latina ever since I studied through the Distant Education Program, at the English Language Institute, University of Oregon. What the Laureate certificate has given me is the rationale and theory I was lacking to ground my teaching practices today much more effectively and soundly.

Through this certificate I expanded and continue expanding lots of the basic concepts proposed by my two instructors at the University of Oregon, Sandra Jeffs and Deborah Healy, who guided my first steps into this virtual learning/teaching journey. Because of these two professors I got confronted with the LoTi Assessment (LOTI Levels of Technology Integration, n.d.), and then –as a language instructor- I made the decision to become much better in the use of technology. Due to my in-depth analysis of LoTi and my former training with the University of Oregon and with a Language Fellow, Skye McLeod, appointed to Costa Rica by the Department of State of the US, I started carrying out empirical blended language teaching and learning for my students at the university by creating several Web pages with content for my courses, which ended up being open 24/7 and beyond the course time boundaries.

LoTi Diagram (LOTI Levels of Technology Integration, n.d.)

When introduced to the Universidad Latina’s Moodle platform, I was really quick in starting to use all possible tools provided by the system. I have come to a point in my professional development and practice in which my courses are some sort of a “flipped classroom” where we come to class to discuss projects and results, but via online I provide whatever I consider necessary for them to complete learning tasks and fulfil the learning outcomes that have been traced per each week of work. The experience has been quite satisfactory and fulfilling, too. I have also learned lots from my empirical attempts and from my students who have been willing to be guided and taught in this way. This has been the greatest achievement or success with my content and language courses at the university. And the Laureate Certificate has given me a much wider understanding of what initiated almost eight years ago, back in January 2008.

While working on one of the modules of the certificate, to have us experience what it meant to be part of synchronous communication, we were asked to get together online despite our location on the planet or our time zone. In terms of the tool used for a synchronous meeting with some of my online partners in the certificate, I suggested using AnyMeeting.Com, a free virtual classroom service that can hold up to 100 participants at the same time. As for its advantages, AnyMeeting.Com allows you to create a virtual meeting room where the host can send as many invitations as there are participants. Anyone can join the classroom and be able to be seen by other participants (as long as they have their webcam on); meeting guests are able to chat while the host is talking (There is a small place to chat and post questions for the speaker.); and anyone can be promoted to be a speaker and to share from videos to documents with the rest of the partners. Its only two drawbacks in its free version is that AnyMeeting.Com has advertisements on the right side of the meeting room (since it is sponsored to be used freely by anyone) and does not allow you to record the meeting (a feature for paying users). But aside from that, there are no issues to complain about. It will remind participants via email, one day before the meeting starts that they have to sign into the classroom without having to sign in for an account.

“Synchronous learning environments support learning and teaching and offer students and teachers with multiple ways of interacting, sharing, and the ability to collaborate and ask questions in real-time through synchronous learning technologies” (Higley, n.d.). Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) should not be the exception to become a way to propitiate deep learning experiences to our students; they should be fair grounds for life-long lasting learning that can become applicable in any hybrid, online or blended teaching scenario, especially when using “synchronous learning technologies” that can potentiate this deep learning we instructors want to see among our learners competencies.

Reflecting Upon LMS Use and Web 2.0 Tools

Hybrid and Blended Learning, LOTI Profile, Online Instruction, Online Teaching Practices, VLE 0 comments

Reflecting Upon LMS Use and Web 2.0 Tools

Professionally speaking, I have been working with the concept of VLE since 2008, and part of my training has been geared towards the use of LMS platforms and Web 2.0 tools to enhance student learning in the courses that I teach on a regular basis. Still I have a couple of concerns that somehow trouble me: my own ability in the use of tools to communicate with students and the lack of formal training by the IT Department at my teaching work place.

Working on a self-assessment of my own abilities to use Web 2.0 tools to communicate with students and to develop course content for my learners, I decided to use the benchmarks already established by the LoTi[1] Connection, which is an American educational consulting firm that specializes in the integration of 21st Century skills into learning curricula. I started with the LoTi idea long ago when being trained by Prof. Deborah Healey and Prof. Sandra Jeffs from the American English Institute / Department of Linguistics, University of Oregon. LoTi has marked my Web 2.0 skills development to fully become an innovative user of technology to promote course content and assist students to achieve learning goals via technology. Based on the LoTi’s Level of Teaching Innovation Framework, I am now at the LoTi 6: Refinement level.

[1] LoTi = Levels of Technology Implementation

A LoTi 6: Refinement level is that one in which an instructors believes in “the pervasive use of and access to advanced digital resources [which] provides a seamless medium for information queries, creative problem-solving, student reflection, and/or product development. [Instructors] have ready access to and a complete understanding of a vast array of collaboration tools and related resources to accomplish learning outcomes beyond conventional strategies” (LoTi Connection 2011). With this in my professional and technological background, I feel quite confident in the use of virtual learning environments (VLES) and the use of Web 2.0 tools to enhance social, teaching, and cognitive presence within these teaching scenarios.

Barely have I been trained by the IT Department at my teaching site in the use of the university’s Moodle LMS platform; for this reason I now ask, “will we teachers get relevant and concise learning experiences [training] to become fully competent in how to really profit from our virtual classrooms? When the new Moodle platform was introduced at our university, we were given a very brief introduction on how to add content to its various features such as homework, chats, forums, and the like. However, the 60-minute training is not enough to become an “expert” user of the tool. For that reason I decided to enroll in a Moodle user’s free course to get really acquainted of how the platform can be fully used at its most potential. Although I feel confident with the things I have tried so far and with the results I have obtained, how could my learning have been if we teachers have at least been trained online on how to use all Moodle features?

As a conclusion, I must say that technologically and psychologically speaking I feel much more prepared to deal with VLEs now that I am taking my third module of the Online Hybrid and Blended Education Certificate. I really look forward to continue advancing through the rest of the modules to complete my formal training and become a much more competent and complete online instructor.
E To fully develop and comprehend this teaching issue, it’s advisable to research and expand these areas:
1
LoTi Framework
2
Self-assessment with LoTi
3
Moodle Training
4
IT Training for teachers
5
Moodle features for education

Personal Online Skills and Knowledge: Self-Assessment

Personal Online Skills and Knowledge: Self-Assessment

When confronted with the self-assessment checklist prepared for an online course that now I am taking with the Laureate International Universities Faculty Development Program, I got shocked to see how much I have achieved in my knowledge and use of LoTi (Levels of Technology Implementation) Profiles[1], which I was first introduced by Deborah Healey and Sandra Jeffs, -two of the University of Oregon TESOL instructors-, about four years ago.

Bearing in mind my former training with the University of Oregon in Web tools and PBL (Project-Based Learning), my subsequent online courses with the Laureate Faculty Program, and my hard-to-quench need for more tools to be used with my ELT and English language students at the university level, I have now realized that I know most of the tools presented by our Laureate instructors. In addition to knowing them, here I have examples of professional projects in which I have used them.

1.    Creation of my own LMS to work with my ELT “Reading Skills” students at the university where I work, to keep track of their course progress and web-based assignments
2.    Regular attendance to webinars by publishing houses such as Oxford or Cambridge University Press to get acquainted with the new trends in my field
3.    Design of web-enhanced content to nourish my courses: prezi presentations, google forms, online quizzes for self-assessment, etc.
4.    Use of blended learning modalities to confront students with the 21st Century learning and encourage them to learn autonomously
5.    Use of web apps for iPhones (and similar), PCs, laptops and Android devices to improve language learning in areas such as phonemics, grammar, and vocabulary
6.    Use of RSS Feeds to feed my own online papers in various areas such TEFL, ELT, Phonemics, linguistics, and Biology
7.    Use of Twitter to get the latest news in technology, educational tools, webinars, and the like from publishing houses, language experts, etc.
8.    Use and modification of HTLM codes to create and embed educational material onto my blogs, google sites, etc.
9.    Creation of podcasts and vodcasts to help students learn content easily 24/7, 365 days a year
10. Use of Glogster along with WebQuests to post students’ research and findings in various areas of their language learning
11. Creation of WebQuests to fully integrate online learning with literary course content and textbooks
12. Use of google docs, now called DRIVE, as a dropbox to keep info, create online forms for quizzes, have students work cooperatively while being online, etc.
13. Use of online chats, forums, livestreams to help students develop their ideas, critical thinking, and writing skills
14. Usage of Skype chat or video calls to work with colleagues around the globe in our areas of interest
15. Creation of voicethreads to have students voice their opinions in the target language
16. Usage of Instant Messaging to have students tuned to the class and its content
17. Use of Movie editing to create sub-products and help students visualize course content, and to post new content for my language courses

I must admit that I never heard of Cascading Style Sheets or Adobe Connect but have to do some research to see how they can be incorporated into my future teaching and professional practice.

To sum up, based on the LoTi Profile Assessment, I’m now a Level 6 user looking for more and more refinement in the things I use technology for: learning and teaching.
