Reading
is, in my opinion, the most important skill in teaching a language. Language
provides vocabulary in context which is very important to learn in English, a
language that has many words and those words can mean different things
depending on the context.
By
means of reading, students are also exposed to grammar structures, and reading unquestionably
brings many different benefits to the language acquisition process each student
undergoes in and outside the classroom (Harmer, 2007). The hard part of
teaching reading is the fact that to really take the most of it, is that it has
to be a habit.
As
I mentioned before, reading has a lot of advantages. In language acquisition is
the most important of the skills. A world of vocabulary is found in books, and it
is very crucial that students get to read, not only for vocabulary but also for
the structures.
Another
thing that we need to learn about English is that language can change and most
books present a lot of slang from different regions of English-speaking
countries. Also, we have learned the difference between extensive and intensive
reading and their importance for all learners. Sometimes the best way to catch
student’s attention about reading is to give them something about their
interest and in that way they will read for pleasure, and they really will pay
attention to what they are reading. In this way, extensive and intensive
reading can really take place.
In
conclusion, reading is very important. However, to really take advantage of it,
we have to make it a habit, learn how to learn for pleasure ant take the taste
out of it. A really good book can give us a good experience and something to
spend quality time. Maybe this generation may not be much into reading, but we
have to make students read, for their benefit.
